Bittersweet Goodbyes and a New Addiction

I've been a bit scarce lately - it's been a grueling few weeks.  Crazy-busy at work, lots going on at church, and some devastating news on the homefront.  My husband's grandfather passed away a week ago today, so the past week was consumed with the arrangements and emotional family gatherings.

In the midst of our own sadness, though, I praise Jesus for taking Papa home and giving him a healthy, perfect, pain-free body, and restoring the mind that Alzheimer's stole from him. We know that Papa is up there preparing a place for us.  And he's cooking a mean pot of goulash - nobody cooked goulash like Papa, and we're gonna' have one heck of a celebration when we all gather once more on the other side!

Papa's Funeral
Goodbye Papa - we love and miss you!

In happier news, I have a new addiction.  Okay, so I can't quite call it an addiction yet - I've only experienced it once… but I am hooked, and I can't wait to dive in again!  What's my new fix?  Art journaling!

I've teamed up with a sweet girl from my church (let's call her Squid).  Squid and I signed up for Amanda Jolley's Joy Journal Project.  The first session was Sunday, but I had to cancel because of Papa's passing.

Thankfully, Amanda is offering the free (that's right, I said FREE!) class online too!  So Squid and I met up at the local library last night, and had such fun playing with gesso and gel medium and paints.

It took a lot longer than we expected so we weren't able to finish - but that just means we get to play together again before next month's session!  My spread is about my husband (you'll have to wait for the finished page to learn what each of the images means to me), and Squid chose to create her spread about a dear family friend who passed away a few years ago.

Joy Journal Project - Assignment 1
Here's my (half-finished) spread from Assignment 1 of the Joy Journal Project.
Squid's layout is (upside down) at the top of the picture.

So what do you think?  Not too shabby for our first (half-finished) attempts at art journaling, if I do say so myself!

Stop by Amanda's site to learn more about the Joy Journal Project - read up on what we did for Assignment 1 - I'd love to see what you create if you join in the fun!

  1. I love this!! And how did you like the Liquitex paints. I've been wanting to give them a try.

I'm so sorry you had to miss on Sunday, but grandparents are so precious. I rejoice with you that his mind is restored in the heavenlies.

  2. Amanda - the verdict is still out on the Liquitex paints... I stocked up because Michael's was liquidating them (perhaps that should have been a warning?) for $2.99/ea... some colors worked great, but others were stiffer and thicker than I would have liked... I hope to find some Golden ones before our next class (if we're using paints in July), and then I will have something to compare them with. :)
